Sargassum is a type of brown algae naturally found in the temperate and tropical oceans of the world. It typically grows in shallow waters and around coral reefs, but it’s also known for forming massive floating rafts that can stretch for miles across the open sea.

These floating habitats play a vital role in marine ecosystems by providing food, shelter, and breeding grounds for a wide variety of sea life, including fish, sea turtles, crabs, shrimp, and seabirds.

Our artificial Sargassum is carefully designed to replicate the natural look and function of real brown algae, making it perfect for use in aquariums, exhibitions, or creative underwater installations, whether for aesthetic or practical purposes.

Please note: The numbers shown under “Size” (8, 12, 16, or 24) refer to the total number of individual fronds combined to create one complete piece of artificial Sargassum.

This is not the quantity of separate units you will receive, but the amount of fronds used to build the overall size and fullness of one Sargassum piece.

Number of Blades/Leaves: N/A

Blade/Leaf Width: N/A

Distribution: Macrocystis pyrifera is common along the coast of the eastern Pacific Ocean, from Baja California north to southeast Alaska, and is also found in the southern oceans near South America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

Description: Macrocystis pyrifera, commonly known as giant kelp or giant bladder kelp is the largest of all algae. The stage of the life cycle that is usually seen is the sporophyte, which is perennial and individuals persist for many years. Individuals may grow in excess of 50m (160ft) long. The kelp often grows even longer than the distance from the bottom to the surface as it will grow in a diagonal direction due to the ocean current pushing against the kelp. The stalks arise from a holdfast and branch three or four times from near the base. Blades develop at irregular intervals along the stipe, with a single pneumatocyst (gas bladder) at the base of each blade.

*Price includes terminal blade and stem for anchoring (rock bases sold seperately)

Number of Blades/Leaves: 16

Blade/Leaf Width: N/A

Distribution: Postelsia palmaeformis is found along the western coast of North America, from as far north as Vancouver Island, to the southern central coast of California. it inhabits rocky shores with constant waves. It is one of the few algae species that can survive and remain erect out of the water; in fact, it spends most of its life cycle exposed to the air.

Description: Postelsia palmaeformis, also known by the common name Sea Palm is an intertidal brown algae that occurs on rocky shores of the Pacific coast of North America, usually in patches from a few to hundreds of individuals. As an autotroph, it produces its own food via photosynthesis. Postelsia palmaeformis is an annual and like many brown algae has two distinct morphologies during its lifecycle – the microscopic gametophyte and the macroscopic sporophyte, which resembles a small palm tree. The sporophyte’s maximum height is variable, but can reach 60-75cm. This item measures approx 35.43″ (90cm) tall!
